Some students have been unable to local their “Senior Information Packet” that is due on or before 5/31/18 to their counselor. Directive to located the packet are below:
Click on “My Planner,” – then click on “Task Assigned To Me,” – then click on “Senior Information Packet”, then click on “Take A Survey,” – when you click on that, you will see the questions. Remember to complete #1 – #29 and your parent complete # 30. Then print it and give it to your counselor. This information is crucial for your letter of recommendation for colleges & scholarships. See counselors if you have further questions.
On Tuesday, April 10th, Drs. James Lomax and Stephanie Hernandez from Baylor College of Medicine presented at the PTO meeting on the Topic of Supporting your Student. The presentation focused on ways to identify and communication with kids in a high stress environment. Attached are the presentation slides for your reference. A huge thank you from the parents to Dr. Lomax and Dr. Hernandez for sharing your time with us.
With DeBakey’s prom coming up on April 21, Ms. Perry asked us to share the attached flyer with some great prom safety tips.
Hello DeBakey Families:
The PTO is selling Chick-fil-A sandwiches/meals Friday, April 6th. Students can order and pay in advance during lunch Wednesday and Thursday. $5.00 sandwich or $6.00 sandwich, chips, & drink.
Please join us for the PTO meeting on Tuesday, April 10th. Events include voting for P.T.O. officers from 6:00 PM until 6:30 PM, and 6:30 PM until 7:30 PM, special guest speakers: Dr. James Lomax and Dr. Stephanie Hernandez will be speaking to parents regarding supporting their high achieving students: how to help them to deal with stress and anxiety, how to monitor them, and how to identify danger signs.
The DeBakey school exercise room will be open for parents to use on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 pm starting this Thursday, April 5. Come join us and look your best for swimsuit season!
The school has had complaints about parents parking in the adjacent neighborhood and blocking driveways. The best option is to drop off and pick up in the school parking lot (the instructions and maps are below as a reminder) but if you need to stop in the neighborhood, please be extra considerate. THanks.

Our new building has brought many opportunities. We are now situated in the heart of the Texas Medical Center (TMC), within walking distance of well-known research facilities and medical institutions. Our new location is convenient for many DeBakey families. The facility is beautiful.
Still, there are two very important challenges that, if we work together, we will overcome. Those challenges are traffic and parking. With your help, student arrivals and departures will be safe and orderly. We will maintain traffic flow that will allow drivers to get where they need to go in good time, and we will limit traffic back-ups.
Arrivals and Departures
Our new parking lot has one driveway that is used for entrances and exits. Drivers will enter the parking lot from Pressler Street, and exit the lot via Montclair. Inside the lot, there are numbered parking spaces as well as Drop-off and Pick-up, Handicapped, and Reserved spaces. Although numbered parking spaces will be assigned to students, we expect to have spaces available so that parents will be able to park and attend to school related business or wait for a student. If all numbered spaces are full, or to drop-off or pick-up a student, or to allow a child time to get items out of the vehicle, drivers should use the Drop-off and Pick-up spaces. Using these spaces will free up the drive lane for moving vehicles.
Traffic Flow Inside the Parking Lot
Directional arrows and cones indicate the traffic path. When cars move against the designated route, they cause traffic to stall. Stalled traffic inside the lot leads to congestion at the driveway and into the street, making the experience of entering and leaving the parking lot very unpleasant. Please follow the indicated path.
When driving through the parking lot, please maintain low speed. Students will be walking among the cars. They may not be easy to see, or they may run out into the drive lane without warning. Low speed will guarantee time to stop and avoid an accident.
Parking Garage 8
TMC Parking Garage 8 is located at the corner of Pressler and Holcombe. Garage entry and exit drive lanes are located on Pressler, along the same path that leads to the DeBakey parking lot. TMC representatives have asked us to please be mindful of the garage and keep the entry and exit lanes open. Let’s demonstrate to the other TMC institutions that we are good neighbors. Please do not block Garage 8.
The heaviest traffic will likely occur within the first 30- to 45- minutes after dismissal. To ease some of the congestion, we have developed a staggered pick-up schedule. Delaying pick-up will allow school buses to pick up students and move out, creating space for parent drivers. Your support by way of following the schedule is appreciated.
- 9th Grade 3:30 p.m. – 3:40 p.m.
- 10th Grade 3:40 p.m. – 3:50 p.m.
- 11th and 12th Grades 3:50 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Be aware of the other drivers, and practice a little consideration. Doing so will help preserve good traffic movement. Above all else, be patient. Remaining calm is good for you and your child. Traffic back-ups will be relieved as quickly as possible. Our capable police officers will help all drivers keep moving.
On Monday, DeBakey’s UIL One-Act Play entry, Dead Man’s Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl advanced to District competition which will be held on Friday March 9th at Chavez High School. Below is the cast and crew list, along with the individual awards the students won on Monday.
We would like to invite you to the District performance on Friday. These schools have advanced from Zone and will perform at District in this order on Friday: 1) Westside, 2) Bellaire, 3) Chavez, 4) Carnegie Vanguard, 5) Heights, 6) DeBakey. The competition begins at 12:30 Friday and the plays run back to back. We cannot provide an exact start time for DeBakey’s show, but we do have an approximate one. DeBakey should start between 5:30 and 6:00 PM. The play is only 39 minutes long and tickets will be sold at the door ($5 for students, $10 for adults, cash only). We would love to have a big audience of friendly faces support our students on the evening of District, so please come if you can. Let me know if you have any questions.
